Takeaway

Intel is down more than 25 percent on Friday after guiding fourth-quarter revenue to 15 to 16 billion dollars, below the 17.07 billion dollar consensus, and saying it does not expect positive cash flow this year. It is the third straight AI-spending and cash-burn headline in two sessions, after Alphabet's record drop and Amazon's cash-flow shock, and it pushed the Nasdaq Composite down 2.26 percent at the open. The chip, cloud and software names are not trading the same story, and the tape shows the split.

What happened (source + time ET)

Reuters (via The Star, October 30) reports Intel's third-quarter revenue rose 21 percent to 16.51 billion dollars, in line with estimates, and adjusted earnings per share were 52 cents against a 40-cent estimate. PC chip revenue fell 5 percent to 8.10 billion dollars. The outlook is the problem: fourth-quarter revenue of 15 to 16 billion dollars against 17.07 billion expected (LSEG), adjusted earnings per share of about 25 cents against 43 cents expected, and PC chip revenue expected to fall in the mid-20 percent range. Intel said an October explosion at its Kiryat Gat, Israel, plant cut the fourth-quarter revenue outlook by about 300 million dollars and gross margin by about 200 basis points, with a similar hit expected in the first quarter. Intel does not expect positive cash flow this year, and capital spending is on track for 20 billion dollars this year and will rise sharply in 2027. CEO Lip-Bu Tan said: "I'm disappointed that we were not able to meet strong customer demand in this quarter."

Yahoo Finance's live page showed Intel at 68.26 dollars at 9:17 AM ET, down 25.86 percent from a 92.07 dollar close. At 8:15 AM ET Reuters had Nasdaq 100 E-minis down 2.6 percent. At the open (Reuters, about 9:36 AM ET) the Nasdaq Composite was down 2.26 percent at 25,592.49, the S&P 500 down 1.16 percent at 7,631.07, and the Dow up 0.08 percent. Yahoo showed the 10-year Treasury yield at 4.935 percent, down about 5 basis points.

Mag7 impact (with tape numbers)

Nvidia is the closest read-through. Intel's problem is supply and execution ("not able to meet strong customer demand"), not weak demand for AI chips, but the stock was trading lower premarket with the Nasdaq; Reuters cited roughly 3 percent, while its ticker showed about 2.5 percent at a different moment. Amazon is where the cash-burn theme is direct: it was down about 7 percent premarket, extending Thursday's 4.25 percent regular-session loss. Microsoft is the contrast case: Reuters noted its large cash-flow beat, even as it raised 25 billion dollars in a debt sale. The tape figures below are the BudFox snapshot from 6:04 AM ET on October 30 and reflect Thursday's regular session, not Friday's moves.

Desk read

Nvidia: Neutral, confidence Low. Intel's miss is about its own supply, factory and PC exposure rather than accelerator demand, but the market is selling semis as one AI-capex trade today. Its 20-day trend was already slightly negative before the print.

Amazon: Headwind, confidence Medium. Another large company warning on cash reinforces the exact worry that hit Amazon on Thursday, and its unusual volume shows the repricing is still active.

Microsoft: Neutral, confidence Low. A cash-flow beat is support, but the 25 billion dollar debt raise and the broad Nasdaq decline offset it for now.

What would change this view: if the Nasdaq stabilizes through the session and chip names decouple from Intel, the read-through would look contained to Intel's own execution.

What to watch

  • Whether Intel holds near 68 dollars or extends what headlines are calling its worst day ever.
  • Nvidia's performance versus the S&P 500 once regular trading settles.
  • The 10-year yield near 4.9 percent and the Q3 Employment Cost Index and Chicago PMI releases.
  • Any capex or cash-flow commentary from the cloud buyers into next week.

FAQ

Q&A · 10

Grounded in this note

Q1 What is the primary reason for Intel's stock decline?

Intel's stock fell more than 25% after guiding fourth-quarter revenue below consensus expectations and stating it does not expect positive cash flow this year. This follows similar negative headlines from Alphabet and Amazon regarding AI spending and cash flow.

Q2 What were Intel's Q3 results and Q4 guidance figures?

In Q3, Intel reported revenue of $16.51 billion, in line with estimates, and adjusted EPS of $0.52, beating estimates. For Q4, Intel guided revenue between $15-$16 billion, below the $17.07 billion consensus, and adjusted EPS of about $0.25, below the $0.43 estimate.

Q3 How did the explosion at Intel's Israel plant affect its outlook?

The October explosion at its Kiryat Gat, Israel, plant is expected to cut Intel's Q4 revenue outlook by approximately $300 million and its gross margin by about 200 basis points. A similar impact is anticipated for the first quarter.

Q4 What is Intel's stance on positive cash flow and capital spending?

Intel does not expect to achieve positive cash flow this year. The company is on track for $20 billion in capital spending this year, with plans for this spending to rise sharply in 2027.

Q5 How is Intel's situation being interpreted as a read-through for Nvidia (NVDA)?

The note suggests Intel's issues stem from its own supply, factory, and PC exposure, not weak demand for AI chips. However, the market is broadly selling semiconductor stocks as an AI capital expenditure trade, causing Nvidia to trade lower premarket.

Q6 What is the 'cash-burn theme' mentioned in relation to Amazon (AMZN)?

The cash-burn theme is directly linked to Amazon, which was down significantly premarket, extending its previous day's losses. This reinforces market worries about cash flow, a concern highlighted by Intel's own cash flow warning.

Q7 How does Microsoft (MSFT) contrast with Intel and Amazon in this context?

Microsoft is presented as a contrast case, having reported a large cash-flow beat. Despite this positive news, its stock performance was tempered by a $25 billion debt sale and the broader Nasdaq decline.

Q8 What does the 'Desk read' suggest about the market's current view on Nvidia?

The 'Desk read' assigns Nvidia a 'Neutral' rating with 'Low' confidence. It notes that while Intel's miss is company-specific, the market is treating semis as a single AI-capex trade, and Nvidia's 20-day trend was already slightly negative before Intel's announcement.

Q9 What specific technical indicators are provided for Nvidia (NVDA) and Amazon (AMZN) from Thursday's session?

For Nvidia, the RSI(14) was 42.3 (mid-range, leaning soft), and it was 2.71% below its 20-day EMA, indicating a mild downtrend. Amazon's RSI(14) was 40.7 (mid-range, leaning soft), and it was 3.79% below its 20-day EMA, showing a downtrend.

Q10 What key events or data points are listed under 'What to watch'?

Key items to watch include whether Intel holds near $68, Nvidia's performance versus the S&P 500, the 10-year yield near 4.9%, upcoming Q3 Employment Cost Index and Chicago PMI releases, and any future commentary on capex or cash flow from cloud buyers.
